Oh, thou hast not experienced the full breadth of yon world... :-) This is usually the case where software issues an I/O operation of the type which blocks it from further progress until the I/O completes - and the I/O operation does not complete. Most commonly, this is due to a device problem, and that can turn out to be a microcode defect. The challenge in a tape-to-tape operation is that either of the drives could be at fault (or maybe even both). There may also be an operating system fault in I/O handling. I gather that you're using those pesky LTO drives. You may have service records on the drives in question, suggesting a problem one. Perhaps the drive panel indicates an error indication, or there are records in your OS error log about one drive or the other? If your TSM server is at the appropriate level and TapeAlert is active in it, you may gain a better perspective on the state of the drives. (Be aware that TapeAlert can end up being more alerting that may be tolerable.) Richard Sims
