Perhaps you swapped the two paths? I have had similar when by mistake creating the path to the wrong /dev/rmt device.
Also, are you sure you should use st devices and not mt devices? The IBM drivers install mt devices, and you will have to unload the st and sgen kernel modules before add_drv of mt module.
