Just a thought: Restore the files to another server, run a backup, whack the files. Then your standard retention period for that server/directory as defined in your mgt class will apply.
For instance, we would do this by restoring this to one of our Netapps and then backing it up. At least the data would be there, dunno about how it'd handle any system object data...
