Reporting back in case anyone else runs into this problem: If you are installing a new LTO1 drive in an existing 3583 library (prior to about 10/2003), it's a customer install and you should just be able to throw it in, right? Wrong!
The newer 3583 libraries have a "multipath" capability that lets them be partitioned. Newly acquired LTO drives (even used/reconditioned ones) are being shipped with microcode that supports the multipath capability. They will NOT work in an existing 3583 library that has not been upgraded to a new microcode level. Symptoms: 1) Applies to you if your library microcode is 2.x.x. 2) If you plug in one of the new drives, the 3583 "sees" there is a 3rd drive, but you cannot set the SCSI id of the drive, it always goes back to 0. What you do: First upgrade the 3583 microcode; when you go to the download site, you will see there are now TWO flavors of microcode for the 3583: 3.x.x for single-path 3583's, and 5.x.x.x for multipath 3583's. Install the new, single-path microcode 3.x.x in the 3583. Then upgrade the microcode in your existing LTO1 drives. NOW you can install the new LTO1 drive. This was news to me. Have seen it recently on 3583's with or without SDG. When we boot our TSM server (win2k) with 2 2940 adapters I see the following sign on: The first adapter shows the Library as scsid 6 and the first (bottom) drive as scsid 0.
