Henry, Make sure you have COMMTIMEOUT on the TSM Server set to a high enough number to accomodate any Exchange activity that may need to happen during backups. I would try setting COMMTIMEOUT to 600 to see if that helps.
If that doesn't help... many times, "-50" errors mean there are network problems. If you continue to see this problem, contact your network group to have them investigate possible network issues.
