Hi Zlatko, the whole environment was w2k, and the HBA was a LP9802 not a LP9002, sorry, I was well aware of the problem with the MaximumSGList, but I thought since I'm using new HBA's with the new TSM version I'll try it without setting this key in the registry and there seemed to be no problem. Backups were exclusivly images

I am not sure is this QLogic specific or owners of Emulex adapters were hurt too. What I can say is that IBM are shipping branded QLogic adapters (QLA2200F, QLA2300F, or QLA2340F) for Netfinity/xSeries systems. As TSM is getting bundled with IBM hardware very often, the issue with MaximumSGList on IBM Wintel platform is well known. For RS6000/pSeries IBM is using Emulex adapters (LP7000, LP9002, or LP9802) and in AIX the setting is called "max_xfer_size" with value measured in bytes. By default the value is 0x100000 (1 MB) and is sufficient for disk operations. For LTO tapes is must be set to 0x1000000 (16 MB). Till now I have not seen description the equivalent setting for other platforms (Solaris, HP-UX, Linux) but am eager to learn it. Backup and restore operations worked fine. We used LTO2 drives and LTO1 tape though. Afterwards you must perform the backup *again* - some times with low maximumsglist setting the data is reported to be written but is not completely. Thus your backup might be not restoreable. I got past my initial problems by upgrading storage agent to 5.1.5.4 (same level as server) Yesterday I managed to run an image backup lan free, 150Gb in 1hr 15 minutes so was quite happy with that. However when I went to restore it 5 minutes later it failed and the server actlog gave me 10/29/2003 16:39:39 ANR8939E The adapter for tape drive DRIVE2WWPK (mt1.0.0.5) cannot handle the block size needed to use the volume. I then tried another image backup and it failed with the same error. During the time of the image backup working then stopping working nothing had changed. I believe the above error is to do with the registry entry for maximumsglist. On the storage agent client I have had maximumsglist set to FF for a while. My question is do I need to set the same registry key on the TSM Server itself? If not then what else can be causing this TIA _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free.
