Paul, Data Protection for Domino tried to read through the database, and encountered a read error. How did the Notes team "check this particular DB"? If they simply "open" the database, it does not read each page of the database like a backup must do in order to back it up. So, it may not have read through the page with the error.
Try something like a compact or a Notes Admin "copy" to have it read through the entire database, page at a time. You could also attempt a normal file level copy to see if it finds a problem.
