On restores/rebuild of the TSM server/database, I initially allocate a very small log volume. The first thing that DSMSERV FORMAT does is format the log volume(s). Then the DSMSERV RESTORE DB does.....format the log volume(s). If this is of any size, you have to wait. I make it small to reduce my recovery time, then after restored and up I allocate the log volumes of the size I need.
For a disaster recovery exercise where we'll just be restore some data, no backups or schedules..I tend to just keep it small. Save time during the recovery. I used to use the DRM script without changes, but when you have to sit through several GB's of log formatting, several times! I got tired of waiting. So did my users. The main concern is that the database is at least as large as the database you intend to restore. As for the log volumes, just make sure that between the two volumes, the sizes don't exceed the TSM maximum size of 13 GB. I suppose the "punt" option would be to just perform the format with the one log volume; I would think that would be large enough, although others with more practical experience than I might have other opinions. Running TSM 5.1.1.6 on AIX 4.3.3 ML10 Ran dsmfmt -m -log /tsmlg2fs/tsmlg2vol 6000 Dsmfmt -m -log /tsmlg1fs/tsmlg1vol ?? (I don't remember exact size ran late yesterday) Dsmfmt -m -db /tsmdb1fs/tsmdb1vol ?? (I don't remember exact size ran late yesterday) Dsmserv.opt, dsm.opt & sys, volhist & devconfig came over from mksysb Went through & changed the server name where applicable. My currnet production server has 2 log volumes. Will I need both to recover the server? For example, what *exact* commands did you use to preallocate the recover log and database and recovery log files? Any other associated information would also be helpful.
