Rube Goldberg was a comic strip long ago. Rube would build fantastically complicated machines to do the simplest tasks. For example, to cook an egg for breakfast he might have a string tied to an alarm clock that would open a pull a lever when it rang to knock an egg into a chute in a hen house which while rolling down would trip a lever to turn on the stove where the egg would drop out of the chute into a pan so his egg would be ready to eat when he got up. So a "Rube Goldberg" became an adjective for a machine or process that was way over complicated to do a simple task. (:
