If it's an AIX system which I believe it is... You must go into smitty - devices - tivoli storage manager devices then define a manual tape drive which will link the /dev/rmt4 to a /dev/mt4 (TSM manual tape device drive instance). This will put a Tivoli Device driver on the manual tape drive. It's pretty self exclamatory once you get into smit and look around at the smit menus. Manual tapes like 4mm's need a device driver in order for TSM to use it. This smitty procedure puts one on it for you. If that still doesn't work just give a shout and we'll look at some other things but I ran into the same thing, and the drive just needs to be identified as a TSM device in smit as well as defined in TSM.
