Geoff,

there is one small difference - gzip is GNU freeware, WinZip is
proprietary shareware. Its usage without paying the license is in fact
illegal.
I personally still prefer gzip&tar and am happy with them. zip/unzip are
also freeware and stable so I always keep them handy.
Just (my) opinion.

Is there any reason that winzip can't handle this. It's what I always use,
then ftp the files to the server.

Hi All:

I downloaded gzip  yesterday. After uncompressing and untarring the
gzip-1.2.4.tar.Z
file I simply did:

1) ./configure
2) make
3) modified my PATH

and everything worked like a charm. This assumes you have a compiler.
