Geoff, there is one small difference - gzip is GNU freeware, WinZip is proprietary shareware. Its usage without paying the license is in fact illegal. I personally still prefer gzip&tar and am happy with them. zip/unzip are also freeware and stable so I always keep them handy. Just (my) opinion.
