The only diffrence between mksysb and the backup command is this.

mksysb Tape has 4 Sectors

BOS Boot Image
Blocksize=512

Witch holds: Kernel, Device Drivers

mkinsttape image
Bloksize=512

Witch holds: ./image.data, /tapeblksz, /bosinst.data, commands

dummy.toc
Blockzise=512

Witch holds: Dummy TOC (dosen´t do anything)

and last

Tape Drive BS

witch holds: rootvg data. (this data is exactly the same as you would use
the backup command)

Now the first 3 sectors canot be used when restoring TSM. you can however
backup this data with the DD command, but for what use?

what i am saying is this. the advantece of mksysb goes the minute you can´t
boot from the tape and you can´t boot a mksyb in TSM, becuase TSM handels
these 3 fist sectors as they where ordenary data.

Hi Lindy,

        What you would like to do is not that very difficult. Like Jason
Barkes said;
        make a mksysb to a local filesystem and backup/archive is to TSM. We
do it like that, but we use NIM to restore a MKSYSB over the network.

        An other option is mkcd, which is included in AIX 4.3.3.
        With this u can put a ksysb directly on a cd, even span multiple
volumes.
        The cd can also be made bootable. Take a look here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/doc_link/en_US/a_doc_lib/cmds/aixcmds3/mkcd.ht
m

        Hope this helps...

hi Lindy

Theoraticly you should be able to do it. use mksysb to backup to optical
device. Then use DD to copy the file to a diks and use TSM to back it up.

But still i don´t understand why you should wana back up mksysb, when you
can´t boot form a TSM tape on AIX, then it would make your mksysb useless.
