The Ethernet connection also provides a lot of other capabilites, such as
talking to the library through its web interface that came out about 3
levels ago.

Is the RS232 port on the H50 set the same as on the SP node?  Speed,
parity, etc, all have to be the same, or you won't communicate.

I've worked with a few Serial connected 3494's, and I'd recommend trying to
get an ethernet connection going, if possible.  It's much more commonly
used, so there's a lot more people with experience with it (including the
IBM CE's you have come out to work on it).  Just my $0.02 worth on that,
though.
