The Ethernet connection also provides a lot of other capabilites, such as talking to the library through its web interface that came out about 3 levels ago.

It's much more commonly used, so there's a lot more people with experience with it (including the IBM CE's you have come out to work on it). Just my $0.02 worth on that, though.
