Bruce, There is a fix to the TSM API that should solve the problem. Look at APAR IC31617. You can obtain the Version 4 Release 2, Level 1.20 of the TSM API by going here:

Once the fixtest is applied, you should not experience IC31372. Bottom line: Apply TSM API 4.2.1.20 and retry the backup.
