We had a meeting a month or so back with some Lotus consultants. The main
issue was backups of Domino. He knew nothing about backups. He wasn't aware
of many of his clients actually backing up Domino servers. He said mostly
they were configured as clusters, so why backup a backup??? But the main
thing I almost threw him out the window for was saying that it was Tivoli's
fault that you could no longer do document-level restores with the TDP
Domino agent. Even after I corrected him, he continued to bring up the fact
that with TDPDomino you couldn't do document-level processing.
He did have one good idea. Since we are also a mainframe shop, he suggested
creating a cluster with the OS/390 being the second server in the cluster.
Then just using regular mainframe utilities to backkup the (HFS) files. We
could create 1 HFS file per disk drive (2.2GB) and just do a full-volume
backkup. Only takes 3-minutes to 3590 tape. The other consideration is to
make the cluster on AIX on one of our SP-nodes and then backup the files
over the SP-switch to TSM. Lots of possibilities.
The consultant said that AIX and OS/390 were the more robust, scalable and
reliable platforms, but NT was the easiest to install/configure.

Matthew,
What are your plans to move to Domino R5?
Once you move to Lotus Domino R5, you can use
Tivoli Data Protection for Lotus Domino.
It uses the new backup APIs that Lotus
introduced in Domino R5.
TDP for Lotus Notes and TDP for Lotus Domino
are two different products. TDP for Lotus Notes
only worked with R4. TDP for Lotus Domino
will work with R5 and planning for Rnext.
Thanks,
Del
