Jeff,
Compressing more than once generally doesn't gain anything in
terms of space reduction, in fact there are certain instances in
which additional compression passes result in *larger* files.
Since you are compressing at the client side, and you are
averaging about 35GB on a 30GB native tape, I'd say you're
getting pretty good storage utilisation.
