Hi Richard
>From a TSM perspective I have found that there are two main differences
between backups and archives.
1. Archives are kept, strictly, based on retention period. e.g. 365 days.
Whereas backups use versioning. Backups can also be configured to expire
based on retention as well.
2. Backups use the include/exclude list to bind backups to backup copygroups
(mgmtclasses) and the archives pay no attention to the include/exclude list.
I have done some tests and have noticed no appreciable difference in
backup/archive and restore/retrieve times.
If anyone has done any extensive testing of this, and found that there is a
considerable difference I would like to hear about it.
Jim

Subject: Archiving vs Backups
Is there any real difference between archiving and running a regular backup.
I currently just run backups and do no archiving. Although to do keep data
for years in some cases. What are your opinions? Should I change my backup
strategy and create archive storage pools.
Thanks for your input :)
