We have always based this on the most recent Last Backup Completion Date/Time for any filespace owned by a node. I believe this will not become polluted by replication. That timestamp does get updated by a valid backup, even if no files in that filespace were actually backed up, because that still counts as a "backup". This is in the filespaces table, not the nodes table. It is a little more effort.
I don't trust the timestamp in the nodes table, because I've seen that can be updated even in the case of a failed backup due to bad password, or a failed hacking attempt. I learned this the hard way, after "Why can't I restore?" questions.
