I believe that the best practice would be to do the following

For Windows NT:

     1. Remove the NT services using dsmcutil remove /name:'<Servive
Name>'.
     2. Remove the old 3.1.06 client
     3. Install the new 4.1.2 client, and move the dsm.opt file to the
correct location (<drive>:program files\tivoli\tsm\baclient\)
     4. Install the new scheduler service. (The dsmcad and dsmagent
services should be automatically installed)
     5. Clean up the old directory structure <drive>:ibm\adsm\baclient (I
believe this is the old default install path ... It's been over a year
since I did this)

Even though this will take you more time I believe in the long run
that it will save you problems. The installs will be clean and they will
all be using the standard TSM install directory structure. Everything will
be allot easier to manage.

For Novell

If you use install(NW3 and older) of nwconfig(NW4,5) then the default
install path will be different that the old ADSM setup. It should be
SYS:tivoli\tsm\client\ba\. You will need to update your scheduler start up
(most likely in the autoexec.ncf) to point to your new installation once it
is complete. In addition you will have to re-setup the passwords for your
node, and the admin id on Novell. It is a good idea to leave the old client
out there just incase you have problems with the Novell client (The Novell
client has had its fair share of bugs as you probably know.).

Hope this helps

We are upgrading our TSM clients from v.3.1.0.6 to v.4.1.2 for Novell and
Windows NT file servers. Is it best to uninstall the old client first and
then install the new client or can I simply install the new client on top
of the old client.

Looking for best practice, pros and cons.

Thanks,
Lynn
