Good question about which tier in TSM the OpenVMS systems are. They are
Tier 1 clients so you will need tier 1 licenses on the server side.
You will also need to purchase the OpenVMS client from us or one of our
resellers. The product is called Archive Backup Client (ABC) and is
licensed based on the size of the OpenVMS system in question. There are
three license levels (let's not say tiers here as that will only confuse the
issue): workgroup, department and enterprise. Enterprise does not mean a
site license! An enterprise machine is a large Alpha or VAX system running
OpenVMS.
See the following page for information about which system is which level.
You can browse to our web site and get even more information:

Is OpenVMS dead? Not quite, but let's just say that Compaq probably has a
Do Not Resuscitate order on the patient. If you have OpenVMS, you will not
find an easier way to back it up than with TSM and ABC. ABC rests on
Tivoli's API (ported from UNIX) and acts like any other TSM client. It
supports all features of the OS and filesystem. It is a very mature product
having existed in the marketplace for 4.5 years with thousands of installs
worldwide. It is developed and maintained by OpenVMS experts. If you have
TSM already, it will take about 10 minutes to install and test a trial
version of the product. You will be a hero in your OpenVMS system manager's
eyes. Especially if he shows you what he has to go through now to get a
good backup (or even a bad one!). End of free, transparent, advertising
ploy.
If you have more questions, the best thing to do is to call me. I'll be
happy to run anyone through this.

Subject: What is OpenVMS and OS/390?
I Just want to get some clarity on the above-mentioned. What is OpenVMS
exactly and what does it have to do with Dec Alpha's. I've got a customer
that has this configuration (OpenVS running on Dec Alphas). Is this a
tier1, tier2, or a tier3 configuration from TSM's point of view?
What is OS/390? From what understand it is an operating system running on
a Mainframe and that this is a tier3 architecture from TSM's point of view.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Jacques Butcher.
