what to do with a bad tape

I have several tapes in my tapepool that keep getting set to unavailable or read
only, I have tried to set the access to read write and they get set back, I want
to destroy the tape and remove them from my library, but have do I recreate
them, if the tape is damaged, I must just discard data.

Will they get regenerated automatically or do I have to do a restore of the
tape??

Any help would be appreciated
