Export performance

I have been running an 'export node' command with 'filedata=backup' for a
client system with about 4.5 million backup files. One of the file systems
accounts for almost 1.4 million of these. The export process has processed
about 85,000 files in four hours, and has slowed down to about 2 files per
second. There are no other processes or sessions competing for access to the
database. We have 3.1.2.50 server running under OS/390. Is there any way to
get the export to run at a reasonable speed?
