"duping" should be "dump". What I did is migrating the data to tape through
Concentrix(switch) and Mcdata(Bridge). DISK(symatrix)
---FC---switch(connectrix)---FC---bridge(Mcdata)----SCSI----3590E.
in AIX server the LP7000 and IBM driver have been installed.
We had a big discussion with Emulex and Mcdata. Those thing is new for them
too.
It looks interesting about what you said. IPs are different. What do you
mean "SAN TCPSERVERADDRESS", we have "TCPSERVERADDRESS
TSM_server_hostname_IP" in dsm.sys, "SAN TCPSERVERADDRESS" is another?

Subject: Re: SAN backup and tape drive share with 3494?
I'm curious. What do you mean, "duping the data through switches and
bridge?" The Emulex website says it should be able to do multiprotocol IP
over the FC SAN. If it's not working, I would suggest talking to the
manufacturer's tech support. They should be able to help with
configuration
of those drivers. I'd love to have a real life case of someone doing it
when I go to my management with the suggestion.
As far as whether the IP packets are traversing LAN or SAN, are you using
the same IP addresses for both adapters? I would probably use a completely
different set of "private" IP addresses such as the 192.168.whatever IP's
that are reserved for everybody's non-Internet use and set up routes for
the
machines. Then you can specify in your DSM.OPT/dsm.sys files the "private"
SAN TCPSERVERADDRESS. Remember, you'll need to set routes on the machines
in order to keep the machines from using the default gateway of the LAN.
With regard to the client only having setup for TCP/IP and not FC, once you
use the drivers to bind TCP/IP to the HBA, the HBA becomes completely
transparent to the client. The client is still using TCP/IP, but the OS
and
the drivers determine whether those TCP/IP packets from the client will go
over the network adapter or the fibre HBA.
I hope that helps. Please let us know how it goes.

Alex,
In fact, the test that we did is duping the data through the switches and
bridge, the Card is Emulex LP7000. That only let you transfer data through
the FC. The backup client has to have at least 2 card one for FC one for
LAN. We can install Emulex driver, but how can we know the data backed up
is through FC not LAN?? The problem is TSM client has setup for TCPip, and
never has a choice to set up FC.

Hi. Actually, depending on your fibre card and drivers, you can bind a
TCP/IP stack to a fibre card and have your TCP/IP client data go across
your
san. At the Emulex website, the lb8000 card says it has the capability of
multiprotocol TCP/IP and SCSI over fibre. I haven't tested it yet. You
might be able to use this functionality to get that TCP/IP data off of your
LAN. Check with your card manufacturer to see if it'll support
multiprotocol TCP/IP and SCSI for your OS's.

Unfortunately today LAN-free backup only works with your agent programs
such as SQL Server, Exchange, SAP - backup-archive clients are not
yet supported.

Subject: SAN backup and tape drive share with 3494?
Hi all,
We are trying to develop SAN with 3494 libr. We have 7 ADSM servers with
3.1, 3.7 and 4.1 version. We have EMC/symmetricx and Mcdata/Concentrix
switch and Bridges. We have done the dump data from symmetrix disk to 3590E
tape drive through Concentrix switches and Mcdata bridges (FC-SCSI) by
using TSM 4.1, and that is LAN-free.
However this is just a TSM server self backup and migration (server and
client in the same box).
If we want backup another AIX client which is using the SAN (EMC/symmetricx
and Mcdata/Concentrix switch), how we can do it?? The FC and LAN are both
connected, when we use the ADSM client backup it looks like the data
transmission is through the LAN.
If it is a NT client (same env. like EMC/symmetricx and Mcdata/Concentrix
switch ), how we can do that??
TSM 4.1 provide a SAN agent, it can make the Client backup directly to
3590E tape drive. But it looks like 3494 atl is not support yet, Is that is
true?? How can the TSM servers share the tape drives??
If that is the case, how we can do our LAN free backup? We have UNIX and NT
servers.
