Hi, Maria. It looks like IP over fibre channel SAN is possible. It depends
on your cards, aparently. My SAN contact at StorageTek (thanks, Paul, if
you read this) pointed me in the right direction, and a little web browsing
turned up some information.

It says, "Robust suite of software including IP and storage protocols."
Down towards the bottom, "The LightPulse(tm) LP8000 is complemented by a
rich suite of software support including storage protocol (SCSI), network
protocol (IP) as well as multi-protocol (SCSI & IP) operation, enabling
advanced Storage Area Network (SAN) implementations in Windows 2000, Windows
NT, NetWare, Solaris and AIX environments." So this card can definitely do
IP over fibre channel SAN. Well, they say it can, and Paul says he tested
it and it works.
If you do something like this, the metadata will be transfered via the
TCP/IP protocol across the SAN. I hope this helps.

Our goal is in fact LAN-free so if this is possible, it might help.
I have a doubt about what will happen with the metadata information that
goes to the server through the net.
Will this work if the connection between server and client is through the
SAN?
Do you have any experience about something similar?.
