Implementing hinting would provide a means to get rid of both the blur and the
sub-pixel metrics:
You could fit the geometry to the target resolution grid then render them
larger and filter down. But the hinting is important.
I think Paul was talking about sub-pixel glyph positioning, not Cleartype.
