For anyone that might be looking for noisy, power-hungry, but
inexpensive x86_64 machines with lots of cores and memory to play
around with NIX, you may want to check recyclers like UNIXSurplus,
REPC, 3RTechnology, etc.

As an example, about a year ago I bought a Supermicro 1U server from
UNIXSurplus (2x Xeon E5-2667 -- 16 cores total, 128GB RAM) for $260.
It is running linux and I use it as a qemu farm to test and try out
different builds and flavors of Plan 9 without messing around with my
stable environment. I suspect the prices reflect the fact that some
are unpatchable for Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.
