The code for efi boot is in /sys/src/boot/efi,
and you can build a custom iso by following section
5.3 of the fqa: https://fqa.9front.org/fqa5.html .
You should be able to start adding prints to bisect
where it actually hangs.

I think that if you edit the /sys/lib/dist/mkfile
to remove $proto, or point at a slimmed down proto,
then you should more or less get what you want.

the format of proto files is documented in proto(2).
