It's perhaps not the toughest choice, but it's not easy. It does seem to be fairly contained, so you may get away with ring-fencing the changes and actually getting the outcome approved.
I would aim at a well documented plan of attack, maybe the community (this community) would be willing, certainly able, to help. Github, perhaps? Lucio.
