i use u9fs regularly; i install it on any unix machine i'm required to care about. these days that's only os x boxes, and the source in the distribution builds without issue for me there. i can dig up the configuration if that'd be helpful, but it's for launchd (apple's inetd replacement). i believe a few folks have posted examples to 9fans in the past. u9fs has the advantage of doing (most of) plan9 auth, which is often neglected by other implementations. it's a bit weird (you store a key on the server, which means you likely want to create a new user for that purpose), but it works.
