it's interesting that neither of philippe's changes,
however justified, make any visible difference
to 9vx on my ubuntu 10.04LTS system: 9vx still
fails almost immediately. that's consistent with
9vx behaving itself as well as on any other platform
until i changed the linux and/or ubuntu version.
i'll see if i can brave gdb some more to find out.
