To complicate the answer: there's an effort to make article and book styles along the lines of Tufte's books. Sidenotes, Palatino and Bera Mono fonts (I use Inconsolata for both paper code segments and in Acme), and shallow sectioning without numbers. http://code.google.com/p/tufte-latex/
