I've had similar problems on OS X, so I think it's a problem with VirtualBox, not Vista. I got past initial configuration and installation, but the system consistently froze when I tried to compile a new kernel. I switched to QEMU and haven't had any issues since.

Aside from switching emulators, all I can suggest is to experiment with different host options and disable any hardware that's not absolutely necessary during installation.
